Norwell MA Community Profile & History
Norwell, Massachusetts is a suburban community in Plymouth County which retains some of its past rural character. Norwell attracted settlers for its agricultural land and it's water power potential. Bounded by the North River, Norwell colonists build grist and saw mills on the river as well as boatyards.
Shipbuilding was a major industry for Norwell until the draft of boats being built outstripped the depth of the river. Until a virus killed off flocks, wiping out many of the producers, poultry farming was the largest business in the town. Farmers had to sell their land to developers which triggered a period of residential development and growth for the town.
The end of World War II brought the G.I. Bill that provided low-interest loans for veterans and created a building boom that almost doubled Norwell's population between 1950 and 1955. Today, Norwell has a suberban residential character wich residents feel has not detracted from its charm as a small, friendly, rural town.
